Police Take 4 Hours to Respond to Looting of Walgreens in San Francisco

What’s the point?

Underscoring how the problem has become so endemic, police waited four hours before bothering to respond to the looting of a Walgreens in San Francisco, at which point the store was closed anyway.

Video shot by a producer at CBS San Francisco who was shopping with his girlfriend shows a number of black youths wearing masks sweeping through the store, thieving items and throwing them into bags before leaving.

The group didn’t care that they were being recorded by surveillance cameras or the CBS producer filming them on his phone.

“End of the day on Easter Sunday should have been pleasant. Instead I was shocked to see looters taking what they pleased with no regard for the law, or those around them, real-life smash and grab,” he said.

The incident happened at the Walgreens store at 9th and Market Streets at about 4:30pm on Easter Sunday.

However, the police didn’t even bother to respond until over four hours later.

“San Francisco police said in an emailed statement that officers responded at about 8:38 p.m. to a report of a group of people stealing from a business on the 1300 block of Market Street. Officers arrived to find the business was closed and no one was there to report the incident,” reports CBS News.

The news network asked SFPD for clarification on why there was such a long delay, although one of the reasons is clearly that shoplifting has become so commonplace in the city, police barely have the inclination or resources to tackle it.

A vendor who delivers products to the Walgreens said he witnesses such incidents on a routine basis.

“They think it’s a free-for-all. You can grab and go as you please,” he said.

The thefts have driven a mass closure of stores across the city, including Walgreens, which has closed at least 17 stores in San Francisco since 2019.

As a consequence of Proposition 47 criminal justice reforms, just 6.6 per cent of thefts result in an arrest in 2022 compared to 15 per cent of cases before it was passed.

The law raised the felony threshold for theft from $400 to $950, giving criminals a virtual free pass to loot up to that limit with minimal consequences even if they are caught and convicted.

“It’s really sad because we don’t really have any places to go shop anymore. Everything is closing down…Walgreens are closing down all over the place too,” said Dina Miller, a resident od the area.

  1. Probably just in spite because they’re leaving. If they weren’t closing this store, they certainly will be now. This is how Buffalo lost all it’s fast food, drug stores, and dept. stores.
