After the CEO of m&s went on the TV to tell everyone he hoped it would act as a wake up call to industry (had they not noticed before?) a story in the guardian(!) this weekend from Clapham junction just down the road. I happen to use that Waitrose from time to time and Walker Smith was undoubtedly their finest employee. Courteous, kind, unfailingly helpful to customers and a hard worker which let’s be honest isn’t common in those shops. But he made the mistake of reacting like a normal person when he saw someone stealing from a company that calls everyone working there a ‘partner’ and claims they are all ‘family’. Instant dismissal for stopping a shoplifter. If I was running Waitrose I’d fire the management. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/apr/05/waitrose-employee-sacked-after-stopping-shoplifter-from-taking-easter-eggs
