NONCITIZENS Get Police Badges After ICE Hits Connecticut Town

A Democrat-run city in Connecticut just voted to let people who are not American citizens pin on a police badge and enforce the law on American citizens.

The timing was not subtle. ICE had just spent days sweeping Danbury. The council answered with a message vote. The mayor, who has spent years talking about growing up without legal status, called it a win.

Danbury’s City Council approved the change 18-2. Lawful permanent residents and DACA recipients can now apply to become sworn officers. Seventeen Democrats and one Republican lined up for it. The only two no votes were Republicans.

Mayor Roberto Alves arrived from Brazil as a child, grew up without legal status, and became a U.S. citizen in 2017. In the clip now circulating, he puts it in one line: “I grew up undocumented. These are my neighbors.”

Now the city he runs just opened armed law enforcement to people who still are not citizens — including DACA holders whose protection is a temporary Obama-era memo, not a green card and not a passport.

Alves told the News-Times the vote was about “removing an unnecessary barrier for qualified people who already call Danbury home.” He added that DACA recipients and green-card holders “can serve in the United States military, serve as firefighters and EMTs, become doctors, lawyers and other trusted professionals, yet under our old ordinance they could not even apply to become a Danbury police officer.”

“The standards are not being lowered,” he claimed, adding “Every applicant still has to meet the same rigorous background, training, fitness and professional standards required of any Danbury police officer.”

Police Chief Patrick Ridenhour backed the ordinance and said Connecticut’s Police Officer Standards and Training Council dropped the citizenship floor for lawful permanent residents in 2020 and extended it to DACA recipients in 2025. Towns can still require citizenship. Danbury chose not to.

Councilman Joe Britton called the ICE operation a “federal invasion of immigration officials in Danbury” and said that while the ordinance “definitely wasn’t planned to be on the agenda” at the end of that week, “I do think it’s timely.”

“There is no reason to vote against this, and if you do vote against this, I truly question your moral compass,” Britton said, according to Fox News.

He went further: “This vote sends a message to our immigrant community that you are welcome in Danbury.” And: “In the Army, I learned quickly your background doesn’t matter when you put on the uniform. Same team. Same mission. I believe the same applies to our police.”

That is the argument. Citizenship is a “background.” A badge is a team jersey. The American citizens being policed are an afterthought.

Council member Candace Fay tried to split the measure — green-card holders in one vote, DACA in another. She noted a DACA grant can be pulled, leaving the city with a trained officer who can be removed. The motion died and the package passed whole.

Federal agents spent late August working the city. Local activist tallies put Danbury arrests in the dozens over a few days, with statewide figures approaching 100 for the week. Officials and advocates described arrests at businesses, on the street, and near school drop-off.

Border Czar Tom Homan noted “We’re out there to look for illegal aliens with final orders of removal, those who overstay, those who are criminals, and we’re out there looking for them and arresting them.”

“ICE has no intention of terrorizing children. That is just a political statement, you know, to enrage the American people,” Homan told CNN.

Danbury police have spent the summer insisting they do not work with ICE and that they follow Connecticut’s Trust Act. That is the local posture: keep the feds at arm’s length, then recruit from the same population ICE is trying to sort.

The city already knows what happens when the two worlds collide. In July, ICE lodged a detainer on Melissa Esperanza Ramirez-Romero, an illegal immigrant charged in a Danbury crash that killed Bridgeport officer Cooper Whiteside and his girlfriend. DHS called her a “criminal illegal alien.” Another case of sanctuary politics and a dead cop on a local road.

The Center for Immigration Studies published its read of the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey. The foreign-born population fell about 2.9 million from January 2025 to July 2026. CIS’s preliminary estimate puts the illegal population down 2.3 million, from 15.8 million to 13.5 million.

“We’ve never seen anything quite like this before,” CIS research director Steven A. Camarota told The Washington Times. “This is big and sustained, as best as we can tell.” He called it “a fundamental change, and it’s profound.”

The Biden-era surge was 8.3 million foreign-born in four years. Latin American non-citizens who arrived in 1980 or later account for the entire recent drop. Naturalized-citizen counts actually rose. The collapse is among people who should never have been waved in.

Camarota again: “The best data we have shows an enormous decrease in the total foreign-born population, with most of the falloff among illegal immigrants.” And: “Regaining control of the border and robust interior enforcement has partly undone the huge increase in the illegal immigration that took place during the border surge.”

DACA is not citizenship. A green card is not citizenship. A police officer carries a gun, makes arrests, and swears an oath to a constitution the applicant may never have taken as a citizen.

Americans are watching the first sustained drop in the immigrant population in nearly a century, and a Democrat city just decided the proper local response to federal enforcement is to put noncitizens in uniform.

The country is not a staffing agency for people who skipped the line. A badge is not a diversity hire. If the statutes mean anything, the people enforcing them should belong to the country whose laws they carry.
