A knife-wielding man stabbed three women in northwest Paris on Monday before being subdued by police, with video footage appearing to show him saying, “Allah commanded me” while pinned to the ground.

As reported by Le Figaro, the attack unfolded at around 11:30 a.m. between the Les Deux Coupoles brasserie and the Porte de Clichy tram stop in the 17th arrondissement.

The victims, aged 19, 24, and 36, were taken to hospital. Two suffered serious wounds to the lower back and abdomen and were listed in critical condition, although none of the three women were believed to be in life-threatening condition. One of the victims was pregnant, according to district mayor Geoffroy Boulard.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion as the attacker moved through the area carrying two knives. One woman told Le Figaro that she saw a young victim lying bloodied inside a bar.

A 31-year-old off-duty police officer, who was jogging nearby, spotted the armed man near the tram station. He called for backup, followed the suspect, and helped an arriving patrol bring him under control.

Footage posted online showed several people restraining the attacker. He appeared disoriented and could be heard quietly saying, “Allah commanded me.”

Authorities said the suspect was speaking incoherently and appeared to have serious mental health problems.

According to Le Parisien, the man also reportedly provided police with a false identity, and his true identity had not yet been established. He remained in custody on suspicion of attempted aggravated homicide.

The Paris judicial police are investigating what motivated the attack. France’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said it was monitoring the case being handled by the Paris prosecutor.

Boulard condemned the “ignoble knife attack” and praised the off-duty officer and passersby whose intervention prevented further bloodshed.

The attack came 48 hours after an alleged Islamist vehicle attack at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day Pride event, in which a 21-year-old German citizen of Lebanese origin drove a rental van into a crowd, killing one person and injuring dozens. He was later shot and killed by police.
