Yesterday, Remix News reported that a 10-year-old boy has been charged with the stabbing and attempted rape of a 22-year-old woman in the French city of Saint-Brieuc.
However, updated reporting reveals that investigators believe he is at least 14 years old. Additionally, while his nationality was not previously provided, it was also revealed that he is a Congolese migrant who has been in France for approximately a year.
The incident began when a young woman was exercising in a wooded area of Saint-Brieuc on June 15. Public Prosecutor Julien Wattebled stated that “a male individual approached her and ordered her to undress, which she refused to do.”
The Congolese migrant then stabbed her twice, once in the arm and once in the abdomen, before fleeing, according to French news outlet Le Figaro.
Although first presented to the public as a mere schoolboy, the Saint-Brieuc public prosecutor’s office was suspicoius about the boy’s age, including based on identity documents that were presented. The prosecutor, Julien Wattebled, ordered bone morphology tests, which revealed he was at least 14 years old.
This difference could profoundly influence how the case is tried legally, as those younger than 13 cannot be subject to a criminal sanction or detention, while a minor aged 13 or older can, under certain conditions, be placed in pre-trial detention and face prison sentences.
If this new age is confirmed and retained by the courts, the investigating judge could refer the matter to the liberty and detention judge.
The Congolese migrant is not the only young person arrested for rape in France in recent days. In Villeurbanne, on June 17, in Feyssine Park, a 14-year-old male forcibly dragged a young woman into the bushes and then attempted to rape her. The woman began screaming, which scared off the perpetrator.
He was arrested shortly after the incident, resisted, and injured a police officer. He was initially placed in custody, but later released under judicial supervision, according to Ouest France.
