German media had its “fiery, but mostly peaceful” moment when it described 54 police officers being injured by migrant gangs throwing fireworks in Berlin as a “normal New Year’s Eve.”
Yes, really.
During a night of absolute bedlam, at least 390 people, the vast majority of them migrant men, were detained by authorities for using fireworks and other pyrotechnics as projectiles against police and firefighters.
Vehicles and other objects were also set ablaze as commentators said the scenes resembled a “war zone”.
Not according to German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle, which quoted authorities as saying the night’s events represented “a return to a more normal New Year’s Eve” without question.
If that’s normal, what’s abnormal?
“Despite the high number of arrests and injured officers, officials nevertheless described the operation as a success and the night as a more peaceful one than last year’s,” the media outlet reported.
Apparently, over 700 potential criminal investigations into activity that left dozens of cops injured and people afraid to walk around Germany’s capital city is “normal” because it was slightly less chaotic than the previous year’s riot.
Talk about a low bar.
In one incident that occurred near Alexanderplatz, police had to disperse 500 people who were throwing fireworks at each other.
The description of the night’s bedlam as “more peaceful,” “calmer” and “normal” brings to mind CNN’s coverage of the George Floyd riots, which the network infamously described as “fiery, but mostly peaceful”.
