Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky begged western leaders to send all their money to Ukraine, asserting they should not “build roads” but fund weapons for Kiev instead.
As we highlighted earlier, Joe Biden told reporters to “hush up” as he casually announced another $200 million aid package was being sent to Ukraine.
Money was also the focus of the conversation when Fox News Bret Baier asked Zelensky how he would respond to critics.
“I say to such persons from government or mayors, think about the war, think about how to defend our people, don’t travel through the world each day, travel to the front line…ask soldiers what they need, do this,” said Zelensky.
“Not build roads for today, don’t do it, spend all your money to the weapons, to the drones…and don’t cry because we are leaders and that’s it,” he added.
Zelensky then repeated the word “Putin” a number of times in broken English before asserting “we can’t have time” for any criticism.
Baier asked Zelensky, “But you’ll stand for democracy going forward?”
“Of course, because we are really defending democracy and we are really defending freedom,” responded Zelensky, who has refused to hold elections and locked up many of his domestic critics.
Last week, Sascha Lehnartz, chief correspondent of German newspaper Die Welt, said the Ukrainian “counteroffensive seems to have failed” and that there was a sense Kiev had “already lost” the war.
“The dispute between the president and the top military officer shows that the unified home front in Ukraine is crumbling,” wrote Lehnartz. “And every doubt expressed in Kiev about Ukraine’s prospects of success is being reinforced in the corridors of European and American government headquarters.”
