China Denies “Mystery Illness” is Overwhelming Hospitals

Here we go again.

China has denied that a “mystery illness” is overwhelming hospitals in major cities after a demand for more information by the World Health Organization.

As we highlighted yesterday, hospitals in Beijing and other major metropolitan areas across the country are reportedly swamped with “sick children” suffering from a pneumonia-like virus.

Health records handed over to the WHO show that hospitals first recorded a noticeable rise in child cases of the respiratory illness in May, five months before Beijing informed global health authorities.

However, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has denied that any kind of major crisis is unfolding in response to an “official request” for information from the WHO.

The WHO seemingly accepted China’s assurances on face value after a teleconference with with officials from the Chinese CDC and the Beijing Children’s Hospital.

“Chinese authorities advised that there has been no detection of any unusual or novel pathogens or unusual clinical presentations,” said the WHO in a statement.

“They further stated that the rise in respiratory illness has not resulted in patient loads exceeding hospital capacities.”

“No changes in the disease presentation were reported by the Chinese health authorities.”

The assurances were made despite videos going viral on social media site Weibo that reminded viewers of the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The clips showed lines of parents snaking through hospitals holding intravenous drips above their children’s heads as well as hundreds of people queuing outside a hospital in Beijing waiting to see a doctor.

I mean, this is China, I’m sure we can trust them to be totally transparent about all this, right?
