A Secret Service agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance’s protective detail has been placed on administrative leave and is now the subject of an internal review and potential criminal inquiry after allegedly leaking operational details about the second family’s travel to the press.
The agent is suspected of providing information for a recent MS NOW report that described Vance’s security team as “fed up” with last-minute personal travel requests.
That story included specifics about a planned Marine Corps helicopter flight with one of Vance’s young sons to a golf lesson—an outing later canceled due to severe thunderstorms—as well as other rapidly changing family movements that agents claimed forced them to cancel personal plans and strained resources.

Secret Service, FBI, and White House officials reacted strongly to the publication of those operational details. A White House official called the disclosures “treasonous,” while a former Secret Service agent described the leak as creating an “intrinsic vulnerability,”
The agent stated: “You telegraphed movement of two protectees, one of which is a minor, and it puts them in the spotlight. The whole purpose is to keep them out of the spotlight. This is negligence at the highest degree.”
Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the investigation in a statement: “A member of the Vice Presidential Protective Division is the subject of an administrative investigation, and potential criminal inquiry, involving allegations of compromising operational and information security. “
Guglielmi added, “While we will not comment on the specifics of this matter, one principle is unequivocal: any conduct that undermines the trust and confidence between a protectee and their protective detail is fundamentally incompatible with our mission and will not be tolerated.”

This latest episode arrives against a backdrop of repeated problems inside the Secret Service, particularly around the protection of President Trump and his team.
The agency remains under intense scrutiny for its catastrophic failures during the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.
A DHS inspector general report detailed how a Secret Service counter-drone operator was still Googling the location of the AGR building rooftop—where Thomas Matthew Crooks lay in wait—while bullets were already flying at Trump.
Local law enforcement had issued multiple warnings about a suspicious individual with a rangefinder and later a long gun. Those alerts largely went unheeded because the Secret Service never established a joint communications room, missing more than 100 radio transmissions.
Corey Comperatore, the volunteer firefighter who died shielding his family, lost his life that day. His widow Helen has publicly described the attack as “an inside job,” stating she believes Crooks “was working with somebody… inside the government somewhere.”
The Vance detail itself has already faced prior embarrassment. In January, independent journalist James O’Keefe released undercover video of Secret Service agent Tomas Escotto, then assigned to the vice president’s protective detail.
Escotto, a Biden administration holdover who told the undercover reporter he voted for Joe Biden and opposed Trump administration immigration policies, freely shared sensitive security information while believing he was on a casual date.

In the footage, Escotto discussed protective formations, shift schedules, travel plans, and real-time locations. He revealed future movements days in advance and even sent images from Air Force Two while onboard with the vice president.
Despite acknowledging he had signed paperwork prohibiting such disclosures, he continued providing details.
The Secret Service placed Escotto on administrative leave, suspended his clearance, and revoked his access to agency facilities and systems. Deputy Director Matthew Quinn stated at the time that the agency has “no tolerance for any behavior that could potentially compromise the safety, privacy or trust of our protectees.”
The pattern is hard to ignore. Operational security around the Trump-Vance administration continues to suffer breaches from within the very agency charged with protection. Leaks that expose the movements of the vice president and his minor children are not abstract bureaucratic failures—they create real-world risks.
The Trump administration has made clear it intends to crack down on unauthorized disclosures. Whether this latest investigation produces meaningful accountability, or simply another quiet administrative leave, will say a great deal about whether the Secret Service is capable of reforming itself after years of documented lapses.
The safety of the president, the vice president, and their families cannot remain subordinate to internal dysfunction, political holdovers, or agents willing to trade sensitive information for media access or personal attention.
