The Netherlands has carried out the euthanasia of a young child for the first time, under regulations introduced in 2024 that permit the active ending of life for patients aged one to 12. The rules apply to terminally ill children whose suffering is deemed impossible to relieve.

The case has since been referred to the prosecutor’s office. According to Dutch Health Minister Sophie Hermans, a report on the euthanasia was submitted to a special commission tasked with assessing such cases. The commission reviewed the documentation and interviewed the doctor involved in the procedure before forwarding its opinion to prosecutors, who will ultimately determine whether the doctor acted within the law, according to Dutch outlet NOS.

Authorities have released no details about the child, including the child’s age, sex, and underlying illness, which all remain unknown.

The Netherlands expanded its euthanasia laws two years ago. Previously, comparable rules applied only to newborns and to children over the age of 12, and even then only under very strict conditions. To qualify, a child must be experiencing suffering that doctors conclude cannot be endured or effectively alleviated, with no realistic prospect of improvement. Parental consent is also required, and the regulations are intended to apply only to children whose death is expected in the near future.

Among the conditions covered are severe congenital defects of the brain, lungs, and heart, as well as serious metabolic diseases.

The expansion of euthanasia rights has been contentious from the outset. Opponents argue chiefly that these are children incapable of expressing their own wishes. Doctors themselves also raised concerns during the debate, with some experts noting that the final assessment of each procedure rests with the prosecutor’s office rather than the medical commission — a structure they say could create fear of criminal liability.

As Remix News reported in the past, euthanasia now accounts for 6 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands.
