President Trump has given the BBC until Friday night to agree to compensate him for broadcasting a duplicitously spliced together speech from January 6, 2021 that made it appear he was calling for violence at the Capitol.
Trump’s lawyers sent a legal letter outlining how the British state broadcaster created “false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory” sentiments and must take appropriate action of face being sued for $1 billion.
The clip in question made it appear that Trump said he was going to march to the Capitol with supporters and encouraged them to “fight.”
The misleading clip insinuated that Trump said to supporters: “We’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you and we fight. We fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not gonna have a country anymore.”
The comments were in fact made roughly 54 minutes apart, and the editing was clearly intended to make it look like Trump incited a riot.
In addition, footage of protesters shown marching toward the Capitol immediately after the clip was in fact from before Trump began addressing supporters.
The letter from Trump’s legal team claims the misleading section of the Panorama documentary has caused “President Trump to suffer overwhelming financial and reputational harm”, and that compensation is owed along with a “full and fair retraction”, and an immediate apology.
It further suggests “the BBC’s reckless disregard for the truth underscores the actual malice behind the decision to publish”.
“The BBC is on notice,” the lawyers urge, issuing a deadline Of 5 pm EST (2200 GMT) to comply or else Trump will file for a legal action “for no less than $1,000,000,000 (One Billion Dollars) in damages.”

As we earlier highlighted, the Director General of the BBC Tim Davie and CEO of News Deborah Turness have already resigned over the matter, along with a leaked internal memo revealing that top BBC executives were acutely aware of ethical issues surrounding their reporting on several key areas.
Trump remarked Monday, “The TOP people in the BBC, including TIM DAVIE, the BOSS, are all quitting/FIRED, because they were caught “doctoring” my very good (PERFECT!) speech of January 6th.”
Calling the matter a “terrible thing for Democracy,” Trump added “These are very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election.”
