China Bans Video Of Kids Performing Pink Floyd Song

Chinese Communist censors have banned a viral video of children performing the Pink Floyd song ‘Another Brick In The Wall Part II’ according to reports. 

The song, written by Roger Waters and released in 1979, features the lines “we don’t need no education, we don’t need no thought control,” as well as a chorus of children singing “Leave us kids alone.”

The video features Chinese children from a performing art school in southwestern Sichuan province, dressed in black T-shirts and doing a street performance of the track complete with dystopian style choreography.

The video initially appeared on the Douyin app, the Chinese counterpart to TikTok, and soon went viral on other social media platforms.

US-based China observer Byron Wan noted that the original video was removed within hours.

Radio Free Asia reports that the school’s channel on Bilibili, a Chinese video-sharing website, has other songs performed by the same kids in the same location but the Pink Floyd song is missing.

The song, which appears on the album The Wall, was written by Waters about his experiences as a school boy in England in the 1950s. In recent times however it has become a protest anthem against totalitarianism in general. 

The development serves as a reminder of how tightly controlled the flow of information is in China where the communist government filters the internet and society operates based on a social credit system.

The Chinese government recently introduced the so called “Patriotic Education Law” to promote subservience to the state within schools. The communist state says that the law is aimed at countering “historical nihilism,” scepticism over the CCP’s description of past events, and to preserve “national unity.”
