Police in Scotland have been accused of using Harry Potter author JK Rowling as an example of someone with a large social media following who could be engaging in a ‘hate crime’ for stating that sex is binary.
The Telegraph reports that during a hate crime “youth engagement” event in Scotland last month, attendees were asked to imagine a hypothetical scenario where an “online influencer” named ‘Jo’ “travels around university campuses” to “debate her beliefs about the LGBTI community”.
Describing ‘Jo’ as “very active” on social media platforms, and someone who believes people cannot change sex, attendees were informed that she “often gets very passionate about her beliefs and will say things like “there are only two genders” and “too many attention-seeking wannabes”.
The report notes that the activity concluded by stating “Jo posted her most recent video with the caption ‘they all belong in the gas chambers’”.
Attendees were then asked to consider whether ‘Jo’ had committed a hate crime and asked “what action do you think the police should take?”
Wow. Jo went from stating a scientific fact to being Hitler in the blink of an eye.
The event was organised by Police Scotland in association with the Scottish LGBTI Police Association and the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign group to mark LGBT Month in February.
As we have previously highlighted, such thinly veiled depictions of Rowling have been used before to demonise those critical of gender ideology.
Marion Calder, a director at women’s rights campaign group For Women Scotland, asserted that Police Scotland were “clearly trying to create a link with JK Rowling” and that it was “deeply concerning” that they had the character of ‘Jo’ go from making “reasonable statements” to something akin to the Nazi Holocaust.
“This suggests that gender-critical women with a high profile endorse a mass extinction, which is frankly bonkers, and sends a message to police that perfectly sane women have been radicalised,” Ms Calder commented.
She further charged that “These woke training sessions given by activists present highly contested statements as fact and would leave officers tasked with enforcing hate crime legislation with a warped view of the issues.”
Police Scotland issued a statement but did not address the claim that ‘Jo’ was Rowling, merely noting that “These events were not mandatory for officers and staff and are not part of Police Scotland’s training.”
Earlier this week, Rowling, whose first name is Joanne and is indeed referred to by those close to her as Jo, said she will not be deterred from “calling a man a man,” despite draconian new hate crime laws that are coming into force in Scotland.
As we highlighted earlier this week, police training materials obtained by The Herald Newspaper in Scotland state that content deemed to be “threatening and abusive” under the Hate Crime and Public Order can be communicated “through public performance of a play.”
A slide from the leaked training material titled “stirring up hatred” also lists ‘protected’ characteristics including age, disability, religion, sexual orientation and transgender identity.
This paves the way for targeting of actors and comedians under the new hate crime laws set to be activated next month.
This is quite clearly the most draconian anti-free speech law ever passed in a western country.
