Backlash As Divisive “Black National Anthem” Played At Super Bowl

Fourth year running

The NFL has once again courted controversy as a song dubbed the “black national anthem” was played for the fourth consecutive year at the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Singer Andra Day performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which has been played before games since 2020 after the BLM riots in the wake of the George Floyd incident.

The song, adopted by the NAACP in 1917, was performed alongside renditions of the actual national anthem by Reba McEntire and “America the Beautiful,” by Post Malone.

Many criticised the move again, pointing out that having two anthems sends a message that Americans are separated by race.
