Joe Biden shouted at reporters as the controversy over his mental competence exploded following a report by special counsel Robert Hur.
Hur’s investigation into Mr Biden’s storage of classified documents concluded that Biden should not be prosecuted because he is a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
A memory so poor in fact that Biden “did not remember when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended, and forgetting on the second day of the interview when his term began,” Mr Hur wrote.
“He did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died,” he added.
That prompted a wave of questions from reporters during an Oval Office exchange when Biden got angry and then betrayed his cognitive deficiencies yet again.
When he was asked about concerns Americans voters have about his mental acuity, Biden roared, “That is your judgement. That is your judgement! That is not the judgement of the press.”
Biden also snapped at Fox News reporter Steve Doocy for highlighting the issue, asserting, “My memory is so bad I let you speak.”
During a monologue about the situation in Gaza, Biden again slowed his speech to a crawl and looked confused before referring to Egyptian president El-Sisi as the “president of Mexico.”
He also said that he would be a “president for everybody, whether you live in a red state or a green state.”
As the Telegraph reports, this elevates questions surrounding whether Biden has early-onset dementia above the partisan fold.
“For one thing, these revelations about Mr Biden’s memory do not come from partisan commentary, or from an apparent slip-up on camera while on the campaign trail,” writes Tony Diver.
“They have been released by a neutral official charged with investigating evidence in this case, and refer to a behind-closed-doors interview, that by the president’s own admission, he took extremely seriously.”
“Secondly, the explanation that Mr Biden was unable to recall basic facts about his own life because he was dealing with a foreign policy crisis suggests that the demands of office are having a significant effect on his mental capacity.”
Biden would be 86-years-old if he were to complete a second term, a prospect that is becoming increasingly remote with each passing day.
