A world renowned museum has decided to change the names of thousands of artworks, some centuries old, removing words and titles that it has deemed potentially ‘offensive’.
The Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain reviewed 27,000 descriptions of paintings on its website, and the signs that accompany 1,800 pieces of art in the museum, looking for terms that might no longer considered politically correct.
The Daily Mail reports that descriptions such as ‘dwarf’ and ‘deformed’ have been removed from paintings dating from as far back in history as 1638, to make them less controversial and in order to comply with new disability laws.
The Times reports that they even removed the word “disabled” from some pieces. Somewhat ironic considering it was to comply with disability laws.
The new legislation, expected to be passed by the Spanish parliament next week, actually eliminates the word “disabled” from the constitution and replaces it with the phrase “people with disabilities,” the report explains.

The report notes that a sign on one of the paintings that previously read: ‘In addition to dwarfism, he suffered from “cretinism with oligophrenia”‘ now reads ‘In addition to achondroplasia, he suffered from “cretinism with oligophrenia”.’
A description for a painting named The Buffoon El Primo, by Velázquez, which read ‘This is one of Velázquez’s portraits of dwarfs,’ now reads: ‘This is one of Velázquez’s portraits.’
Another two works of art by Rodrigo de Villandrando and Juan van der Hamen y León, previously titled ‘Prince Felipe and the Dwarf, Miguel Soplillo’ and ‘Portrait of a Dwarf’ were renamed.
The firsts just been stripped of the word ‘dwarf’, while the second replaced the word ‘dwarf’ with ‘buffoon.’
Bit harsh on the dwarf that, no?
In a statement, the museum noted that it has decided to listen to the “political consensus” and “to revisit, with a sharper criterion, signs that we did not see anything odd about when they were written, but that now we find are out of step with the times.”
The museum also said that titles of works would not be modified where they were “historical”, whatever that means. One such work is The Faggot, Auntie Gila, an engraving by Goya, in which all the words, even the word ‘faggot’, will remain. For now.

Next steps:
– painting over them to “correct them”; longer limbs on the dwarves, for instance, or simply replace them with something (a vase, a black cloud,…)
– more simply, destroy the paintings so that autumn and winter scenes don’t offend those afraid of death (dead leaves! no leaves, dead trees! climate ebullition!), still life pictures won’t offend vegans, the depiction of people won’t offend muslims, and the depiction of reality won’t “trigger” leftists
And the neutering of language continues as the modern day buffoons re-write history in their own image. How ever did we survive all those centuries without their “wisdom” to guide us in times past?
