If a certain few hold all the power in the world, you can be damn sure they would see high polution of humans a threat, so they would do a culling to control it all.

I for one support the idea of them moving away from society and grouping together. If the world will truly end it will not save them. If “the event” will be a massive backlash and rise against them its better to know where they actually are. Close off those islands with heavy armed forces so they cannot get out and let them rot there forever.
Without them actively influencing the societies of the world we can actually build something better. Or just simply the actual armed forces throw a few nukes down the hatch of these bunkers when they are inside and problem solved for a long time
Nukes don’t exist and if there is a social cataclysm you can be damn sure the 1% would survive with their state of the art bunkers.
