Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is looking for western countries to “absorb” large numbers of Palestinian refugees created by Israel’s bombing of Gaza.
Netanyahu made the comments during a meeting of his Likud party on Monday.
“Our problem is countries that are ready to absorb them and we are working on it,” Netanyahu said.
The Israeli leader said that a team must be established to “ensure that those who want to leave Gaza to a third country can do so.
“It needs to be settled. It has strategic importance for the day after the war,” he added.
As we previously highlighted, a leaked Israeli intelligence document revealed a plan to ‘expel’ 2.2 million Palestinian refugees and send them to Europe, Canada and the United States.
Last month, Danny Danon (Likud) and Ram Ben-Barak (Yesh Atid) wrote a bi-partisan op-ed calling on “countries around the world to accept limited numbers of Gazan families who have expressed a desire to relocate.”
According to Danon, Israel has already received offers from several countries in South America and Africa to take in Palestinian refugees.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, western countries are somewhat hesitant to offer a helping hand.
