A work of art by Banksy expressing opposition to the bombing of Gaza was stolen by two black men less than an hour after it was installed on a street in South London.
After the elusive artist confirmed he had made the piece in a social media post, it was quickly swiped.
The artwork featured a traffic stop sign with three small aircraft said to represent military drones.
But almost as soon as it began to draw admirers, the valuable piece was gone.
“He put the Lime bike under the sign, stood on the Lime bike and tried to hit the sign, he hit it with his hands and it wasn’t going anywhere,” said one eyewitness.
“He fell off the Lime bike at one point. He disappeared and went away and about two minutes later he reappeared with bolt cutters and just sort of tried and tried and tried while everyone was watching.”
A video shows the culprit pulling down the art and running off down the road with it.
Onlookers tried to plead with the thieves to leave the piece alone, but they weren’t interested in hearing it.
Maybe Banksy, who doubles as a left-wing activist, should have erected the artwork in a less diverse area of the UK.
