In yet another sign that the UK is not a serious country, two teenage boys were arrested for “misogynistic chanting” during a football game.
The arrests occurred during today’s game between Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday at St. Andrew’s.
The two 17-year-old boys were collared by West Midlands Police for chanting something offensive towards a female referee, which constituted a “public order offence.”
“Our officers heard the chants being directed at the official and acted quickly to arrest the two, who are both 17,” said police. “They are currently in custody on suspicion of a public order offence as we carry out enquiries.”
The story is particularly funny because chanting offensive things at referees (the vast majority of whom are male) has been a tradition of attending football games in the UK for over half a century.
Indeed, “the referee’s a wanker” is a specifically male-oriented insult, yet has been a staple of football chants for generations.
Apparently though, because referee Rebecca Welch is female, equality doesn’t apply in this instance.
If the chants had been aimed at a male official, no one would bat an eyelid, never mind asking cops to get the handcuffs out.
The referee was recently promoted by Professional Game Match Officials Limited in the name of “advancing diversity among officials.”
Don’t make fun of anything to do with “diversity,” or you might end up behind bars.
