After the grossly bloated $1.7 trillion Omnibus spending bill advanced in the Senate by a vote of 70-25, GOP Senator Rand Paul held a press briefing during which he wheeled in the “abomination” on a trolley and demanded to know how anyone would be able to read it before the end of the week.
Paul, along with the only other dissenting Senate Republicans Mike Braun, Ron Johnson, Mike Lee, and Rick Scott highlighted how ludicrous the fast tracking of the bill has been.
Emblazoned on the cart Paul brought the big in on were posters reading “1.7 Trillion of Hazardous Debt,” “Beware debt hazard of 1.7 trillion added to the national debt,” “Greatest threat to our national security: 1.7 trillion added to the debt.”
“I brought with me the omni, 4,155 pages. When was it produced? In the dead of night. 1:30 in the morning it was released,” Paul urged, adding “What is more dangerous to the country? $1.1 Trillion in new debt or as Republican leadership likes to say, “Oh, it is a win! It is a big win. We’re getting $45 billion for the military.”
Paul continued, “So which is more important? Which threatens the country more? Are we at risk of being invaded by a foreign power if we don’t put $45 billion into the military? Are we more at risk by adding to a $31 trillion debt?”
“The process stinks, it is an abomination,” Paul further asserted, adding “It is a no-good rotten way to run your government. [The Federal Government is a] $6 trillion entity, and they want 24 hours to process this and then they want to go forward.”
“I will be demanding two amendments,” Paul noted, explaining, “One, that this goes against the budget rules. The Pay-Go rules say you can’t do this. You can’t have all this new spending unless it is offset. We will also be demanding that the Pay-Go rules are increased instead of taking 6 votes to evade the rules, we’re going to ask that it be a 2/3 vote to evade the rules.”
“The American people don’t want this, they’re sick and tired of it. They’re paying for it through the nose with inflation,” Paul further declared, explaining that “Adding a trillion dollars to the deficit will simply fuel the fires that are consuming our wages and retirement plans. It is a terrible system. Someone needs to stand up. We’re standing up and we’re going to say no.”
Paul previously charged that “emasculated” Republicans have “completely and totally abdicated the power of the purse” by going along with the spending bill.
The Senator also posted his own version of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’, highlighting the spending bill:
A reporter asked Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer Tuesday how anyone was supposed to read the bill.
“How is it a functional process to drop a 4,100 page bill this morning and expect a vote on it tomorrow? When most of Congress hasn’t had a chance to review this,” the reporter asked, to which Schumer replied: “The bill has been carefully worked on by the Appropriations Committee for a very, very long time, and most of the provisions of the bill were well known weeks and weeks in advance.”
“Getting this bill done for the American people, which really matters, is the most important thing,” Schumer added.
