“I’d Like To Pay Their Salaries”: Elon Musk Offers Lifeline To TSA Agents

As Democrats hold paychecks hostage in DHS shutdown

Elon Musk has cut through the Washington gridlock with a direct offer to personally cover TSA agents’ salaries, exposing how Democrats are weaponizing a partial government shutdown to advance their immigration agenda at the expense of hardworking Americans and national security.

Now in its 36th day, the Department of Homeland Security funding lapse—triggered after Democrats blocked multiple bills—has left essential TSA workers without pay since mid-February. The result has been soaring absentee rates, hundreds of resignations, and nightmare lines at airports during peak travel season.

Yet while career politicians play games, Musk is delivering real relief.

Musk posted on X early Saturday: “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.”

The proposal comes as chaos mounts. By week’s end, 10% of TSA workers failed to show up—just shy of record highs earlier in the standoff. Nearly 400 agents have already quit, according to DHS data. Travelers face hours-long delays, with the situation echoing—but not yet matching—the disruptions from last year’s record 43-day shutdown.

Democrats have blocked the Homeland Security Appropriations bill five times since funding expired, with Friday’s motion failing 47-37 amid a filibuster. Only one Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, voted yes. The party remains furious over provisions strengthening ICE and CBP without their preferred changes to enforcement operations.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer responded: “The chaos at TSA is reaching a boiling point. We need to reopen it as quickly as possible. That is what Senate Democrats are intent on doing.”

Yet reports indicate Schumer’s fury has only intensified with Musk’s intervention.

Fetterman noted, “TSA agents across the country are relying on food pantries and community donations just to get by. I remain the lone Dem to vote with my Republican colleagues to fully fund DHS and get people paid. It should never come to this point.”

This marks the third time in six months TSA officers have faced unpaid work. Airline CEOs from American, Delta, Southwest, and JetBlue have urged Congress to act, warning it’s “difficult, if not impossible” for workers to cover basics like rent and groceries. Over 300 officers have already walked away since February alone, with more expected if the impasse drags on.

The shutdown’s roots lie in Democrats’ refusal to pass clean funding that prioritizes border enforcement alongside TSA operations. Instead, they’ve pushed to carve out TSA dollars separately—moves Republicans have rejected to avoid splitting critical agencies. The human cost is clear: families scrambling, security staffing thinned, and travelers paying the price in wasted time and frustration.

Musk’s offer serves as a stark rebuke to a system that treats essential workers as political pawns. While Democrats sermonize about protecting “the vulnerable,” they’re the ones forcing agents onto community handouts and stranding families at terminals.

Musk’s willingness to step up proves private innovation and resolve can outpace bureaucratic failure every time.

The message to Senate Democrats is simple: end the games, fund the mission fully, and stop holding American workers—and travelers—hostage.
