This Is Now New York City…

Ramadan mass prayer in Times Square sparks controversy

Videos and photos circulating on X show thousands of Muslims assembling in Times Square for evening prayers during the holy month of Ramadan, with some observers describing the scene as a disturbing display in one of America’s busiest urban hubs.

The gathering, which included participants laying out prayer mats and removing shoes amid the neon lights and billboards, has fueled intense reaction online.

Footage captured the area fully occupied for the prayer, with rows of worshippers kneeling in unison, surrounded by smatterings of tourists and vendors.

Footage went viral of one speaker addressing the crowd, leading to chants of “Allahu Akbar.”

Many likened the scene to an invasion or claimed the city has been conquered.

Professor and author Gad Saad quoted a post about the event in the context of 9/11, adding sarcastically: “What’s the big deal!? Just a bunch of pious men praying to Allah. I’m sure that it will all work out.”

A counter-response called the ‘Times Square Dog Lovers Gathering,’reportedly formed.

The event comes on the heels of the controversy ignited by Rep. Randy Fine’s social media posts, as detailed in our previous coverage

Fine had responded to New York activist Nerdeen Kiswani’s remark about dogs being “unclean,” leading to widespread backlash from Democrats who labeled his statements as ‘bigoted’.

Fine, undeterred, announced plans to introduce the “Protecting Puppies from Sharia Act,” which would withhold federal funds from jurisdictions banning dogs as pets.

In an interview, Fine tied the bill to concerns over cultural shifts in areas with growing Muslim populations.

New York City, home to over 285,000 Muslims according to recent estimates, has seen similar gatherings in past years, often coordinated by local Islamic organizations. No incidents of disruption were reported during the event.
