A Guatemalan illegal alien fleeing ICE killed a Georgia teacher Monday after blowing through a red light and slamming into her vehicle, federal and local officials said.
Oscar Vasquez Lopez, 38, initially complied when ICE agents attempted a traffic stop in Chatham County but then made a “reckless” U-turn and fled, running a red light before colliding with a civilian vehicle, according to an ICE statement.
The driver, Hesse K-8 teacher Linda Davis, died at the hospital. Lopez remains hospitalized with minor injuries and in custody. He faces charges including first-degree homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, driving without a license, and failure to obey a traffic control device.
Davis’s school issued a letter to parents offering condolences and counseling for students and staff, noting the crash occurred “just outside the school.”
The school called Davis a “beloved member of our school family” and a former coworker told WTOC11 that she “always made you feel like you mattered.”
The Chatham County Police Department confirmed the arrest and death but said they had no advance knowledge of the ICE operation. Chief Jeff Hadley said Davis’s death was “more than likely, preventable.”
County Chairman Chester Ellis echoed that sentiment, telling WTOC11 there’s a “better way to do this” and that local officials should have been “at the table” to craft safer strategies, noting the police department maintains a no-chase policy “to help protect our citizens.”
This is an utterly disgusting lie.

ICE agreed the death was preventable, but blamed Lopez for fleeing. The agency offered prayers to Davis’s family and community.
