Russia Has Suffered 1.3 Million Casualties, According To A NATO Source

As Putin dumps physical gold to fund its war in Ukraine, estimates place Russian losses at 1.3 million soldiers dead, wounded or missing

Losses for both Moscow and Kyiv continue to mount as the war in Ukraine is close to entering its fourth year.

A unnamed high-ranking NATO official has estimated that last year alone, Russia saw 400,000 of its soldiers end up killed or wounded.

“Moscow is thus sacrificing more men and women than in any European conflict since the Second World War,” he added, according to a report out of Die Welt. The source has also blamed Russia’s higher losses on insufficient medical care on the battlefield.

In total, there are said to be some 1.3 million Russian soldiers dead, wounded, or missing, close to the 1.1 million estimate from British defense intelligence last October, although exact numbers have been difficult to confirm for either side. Of that 1.3 million caualty figure, approximately 350,000 have been killed.

Last week, Zelensky told France 2 TV that 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have officially been killed in action, while a “large number” are missing. In the summer of 2025, the Center for Strategic and International Studies in D.C., put the number of Ukrainian losses at 400,000.

Both sides have been accused of hiding the real numbers, while critics have also claimed that Russia and Ukraine are inflating enemy losses.

Ukraine is also facing a “difficult” frontline situation, with Russian forces making gradual territorial gains at several locations. The winter weather, according to the source, has been a particularly difficult hurdle.

Areas under attack include the Lviv region, less than 60 kilometers from the Polish border, an EU and NATO member. Air defenses were used, according to Lviv’s mayor, Andriy Sadovyi.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military claims to have attacked and hit an oil refinery belonging to the Lukoil group in the Volgograd region of southern Russia with drones overnight into Wednesday. The attack caused a fire at the facility, according to the Ukrainian General Staff.

Of key importance has been the ongoing battle for a critical logistics hub for Ukraine, Pokrovsky, which remains heavily contested.

Meanwhile, many have questioned how much longer Putin can keep up its military offenses, as the country has reportedly been selling gold to fund its war of aggression so fast that its holdings have dropped 70 percent.
