Two young people in Paris faced potentially life-changing injuries after a migrant suspect Haku H. was arrested for slashing their faces. French media reports he told police he was “the Joker,” in reference to the character from the film “Batman.” The suspect allegedly injured their faces during a knife attack on Sunday evening, Nov. 9, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, near the Grand Palais.

The male victim in the couple appeared to have sustained the most serious injuries, including deep slash wounds to his cheeks.

The suspect kept saying:  “You’re kidding me, why are you humiliating me?”

The male victim told police he was walking with his girlfriend when the aggressor, attacked them “for no apparent reason.” Police described the suspect as “African-type” in appearance with “dreadlocks”

A journalist from Actu17 also reported on the horrifying injuries on scene after the attack.

“We have just learned that several people were attacked with knives near the Champs-Elysées. The perpetrator said he wanted to reproduce the Joker’s smile on his victims.,” said Remy Buisine, who was reporting from the scene from Actu 17. “The police arrived and arrested this man, who threatened the police as he was being questioned…An investigation has been opened into attempted murder and, according to the Actu17 website, which revealed the news on Sunday evening, the two victims are currently in hospital with no vital prognosis.”

The assault occurred around 9:30 p.m. on rue François-Ier. According to information collected by French media outlet Valeurs Actuelles, the individual approached a couple from behind and stabbed the man twice in the face.

Although the woman was also allegedly attacked in her face, it is unclear what injuries she sustained, but emergency services treated both victims for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police officers quickly intervened and managed to arrest the suspect, with the accused turning his knife on the officers as well. Officers deployed their taser before they finally managed to handcuff Haku H. The suspect is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Valeurs Actuelles reports the man was born in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, which is an island in the Caribbean. He is 31 years old, and says his name is Haku.

According to a source close to the case interviewed by Actu17 and cited by Le Journal du Dimanche, he also “claims to be the Joker from the Batman film.”

France has long been plagued by crime, often perpetrated by non-French citizens or those with a migration background. JDD claims 638 crimes and offenses are reported daily in Paris, including fraud, rape, burglary, and vehicle theft. In Paris alone, JDD reports that the number of homicides rose 36 percent in 2024 over 2023.

However, the issue has impacted the entire country. Remix News reported earlier this year that data for 2024 showed that every day, French citizens fell victim to 3 murders, 600 burglaries, 330 sexual assaults and armed robberies, and over 1,000 common assaults last year.
