A clip of Barack Obama calling for a State crackdown on content shared to social media has gone viral.
In the footage, Obama explicitly advocates for government regulatory constraints on social media platforms to enforce a singular set of “facts” and suppress what he deems “hateful,” “polarizing,” or “dangerous” content.
Speaking at The Connecticut Forum in Hartford, alongside historian Heather Cox Richardson, Obama framed this as a necessary evolution in journalism and digital discourse. However, his remarks reveal a profound tension: a professed embrace of “diversity of opinion” paired with a push to criminalise divergence from elite-approved narratives under the Orwellian banner of combating “diversity of facts.”

While the clip dates from June, it has been spread widely over the past 24 hours on social media, with commentators noting that it is not mere rhetoric, but rather a direct call for censorship, dressed in the garb of democratic preservation.
Obama’s arrogance shines through in his unspoken premise: his facts are the immutable truth, while any challenge constitutes a societal threat warranting state intervention.
“Part of what we’re going to have to do is to start experimenting with new forms of journalism and how do we use social media in ways that reaffirm facts, separate facts from opinion. We want diversity of opinion. We don’t want diversity of facts,” he asserts.
He then immediately escalates, declaring “there is a difference between these platforms letting all voices be heard versus a business model that elevates the most hateful voices, or the most polarizing voices, or the most dangerous in the sense of inciting violence voices.”
“That I think is going to be a big challenge for all of us that we’re going to have to undertake,” he further states.
Obama’s proposed framework directly mirrors George Orwell’s 1984, where the Ministry of Truth oversees reality. When he calls to “reaffirm facts, separate facts from opinion,” he demands platforms prioritize “verified” information—but who does the verifying?
Obama assumes elite consensus, like his claims on the 2020 election, is fact while dissent becomes mere “opinion.” His declaration that “we want diversity of opinion” but “don’t want diversity of facts” represents arrogant gatekeeping, treating contested issues such as COVID origins or election integrity as settled and labeling skeptics “dangerous.”
Proposing “government regulatory constraints” means state mandates on algorithms and business models—a false assurance, as it compels viewpoint discrimination by forcing platforms to demote “hateful” speech.
Finally, his warning against platforms that “elevate the most hateful and dangerous” voices equates dissent with threat, using subjective smears where “polarising” targets anything right-of-center and debate gets conflated with violence.
Earlier in the interview, Obama’s “reptilian brain” riff blames social media for amplifying “anger, resentment, [and] conspiracy theories”—code for narratives challenging progressive orthodoxy.
The contradiction is glaring. He champions “diversity of opinion” yet brands diverging views “hateful.” This reveals the hubris: Obama’s narratives are truth; yours are poison.
The First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” Obama’s proposal infringes directly. It engages in viewpoint discrimination by forcing platforms to “elevate” approved facts while demoting “hateful” ones, which is unconstitutional content-based censorship.
Obama’s “consistent with the First Amendment” caveat thus rings completely hollow.
