‘They’ve Been Falling For It For 10 Years’: Scott Jennings’ Theory On Trump’s Third Term Talk

“I think they’re probably selling a ton of hats because of it”

CNN political commentator Scott Jennings said Tuesday that the talk about President Donald Trump serving a third term is part of a familiar pattern, and Democrats are once again taking the bait.

As speculation grew over whether Trump might seek another term despite constitutional limits, the president posted a Truth Social meme showing a mock campaign sign ending with the phrase “Trump 4eva.” During a panel on “The Arena,” Jennings dismissed speculation that Trump might seriously be considering ways around the Constitution’s two-term limit, describing the talk as part of Trump’s long-running strategy to “troll” his opponents.

“I think he’s trolling the Democrats, which he loves to do. And they fall for it every time. They’ve been doing it for 10 years on a number of issues,” Jennings told Kasie Hunt. “Look, the president himself acknowledged that this sort of gimmicky idea about electing him vice president. And I guess the other gimmick would be to elect him speaker of the House and then have the president and vice president.”

Jennings said talk of Trump seeking a third term amounts to little more than political theater.

“These are all gimmicks. He said it would be too cute by half. And he’s right. He’s not going to need a third term. He’s had two very successful terms, I’m sure, by the end of 2028. But I think this is a troll. I think people are unnecessarily falling for it,” Jennings said. “And I think they’re probably selling a ton of hats because of it. And they’re laughing the entire time it’s happening.”

Ratified in 1951, the 22nd Amendment bars any president from serving more than two terms. Despite this, law professor and ABC News contributor Kim Wehle said in March that the Supreme Court’s decision to keep Trump on the ballot in states such as Colorado, Maine, and Illinois could leave room for future challenges to that limit.

Trump brushed off the idea in an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, saying that while many have urged him to run again, he remains focused on the current administration.
