A 28-year-old Afghan man is on trial before the Landshut Regional Court in Bavaria, accused of attempting to murder his three-year-old daughter by placing a bag of rat poison in her mouth in an alleged plot to avoid paying child support.

Prosecutors say the man, identified as Elias G., planned the crime for at least a month in late 2024 after separating from the child’s mother. He is accused of inserting a plastic wrap seal containing 560 milligrams of aluminum phosphide — a highly toxic pesticide used to kill voles — into his daughter’s mouth.

According to the indictment, cited by Die Zeit, he wanted to make the girl’s death look like the mother’s fault and later handed the still-living child over to her.

Shortly afterward, the girl vomited violently and expelled the poison bag. She was rushed to a children’s hospital, where she survived without lasting injuries. “He pursued unbridled and ruthless gain at any cost, including the loss of a human life,” prosecutors said of the defendant.

The child’s mother recalled smelling garlic on her daughter — a distinctive sign of aluminum phosphide poisoning. “I was afraid of him,” she told the court, describing a strained relationship with the Afghan national that had involved violence and even a restraining order. The defendant’s relatives, however, insist he is innocent, describing him as “a loving father.”

Defense lawyers rejected the accusations entirely, claiming their client is being framed. They alleged that the mother orchestrated the poisoning to pin the blame on their client, criticized the police investigation as inadequate, and questioned the evidence.

In a twist, Bild later reported that paramedics testified that they suspected the poison bag had been placed in the vomit after the fact, and the defense claimed the child may never have swallowed it at all.

The trial also heard that an anonymous letter written in broken German had been sent to police, alleging that Elias G. was planning to harm his wife and might attempt to smuggle illegal substances upon his return from a November 2024 trip abroad.

The defense questioned the child’s mother about the letter in court, but she denied any involvement, despite having described details from it during her emergency call.

The prosecution maintains that the poison package recovered by police proves the defendant’s intent to kill.

Several further hearings are scheduled, and a forensic pathologist is expected to testify on the key evidence. A verdict is expected in early November.
