A 17-year-old Ukrainian boy was stabbed to death in a frenzied knife attack at an Irish refugee center just four days after arriving in the country, police confirmed.
Vadym Davydenko was killed on Wednesday morning at emergency accommodation provided by the Irish Child and Family Agency (Tusla) in the Grattan Wood apartment complex in Donaghmede, north Dublin.
He was stabbed multiple times in the head, eyes, and chest with a kitchen knife during the attack, which also left a female staff member injured as she tried to intervene, according to the Daily Mail.
A Somali teenager, currently under medical supervision in a Dublin hospital, has been identified as the prime suspect in the investigation. Irish authorities said his injuries are not life-threatening, but that he cannot be questioned yet due to his condition.
“It will be a number of days before the investigating gardaí can talk to the suspect to try and piece together why this happened because he’s going to be under medical supervision for a while,” a police source noted.
The Somali youth was one of four teenagers housed at the Tusla facility, which accommodates minors who arrived in Ireland unaccompanied by adults. Vadym, who had fled Ukraine in search of a better life and education, was due to move to accommodation designated for Ukrainian refugees.
The Kyiv Post reported that two other teenagers were also attacked, though one managed to fight off the assailant.
A female care worker also suffered injury and was hospitalized after attempting to stop the assault. “I came home to chaos,” a resident of the apartment complex told the Irish Times. “There were people running around everywhere, some of them covered in blood. The guards were asking them if they were injured. The first thing I saw was the Emergency Response Unit running into the apartments, and then chaos. One of the women, she looked like a care worker, had blood on her hand and she didn’t realize she was stabbed until she washed her hands.”
The Ukrainian Embassy confirmed it is in contact with Vadym’s family and Tusla and is making arrangements for his body to be repatriated to Ukraine. “We express our deepest condolences to Vadym’s family and loved ones during this time of profound grief,” a spokesperson said.
Plans are being made to repatriate Vadym’s body to Ukraine.
The authorities confirmed they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident and are “following a definite line of inquiry.”
Several Ukrainians who fled war in their homeland have been murdered or attacked in their Western refuges.

The same month, a man who claimed to be a 17-year-old Libyan was arrested after the rape of a 32-year-old Ukrainian woman near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
While in February, a 19-year-old Afghan asylum seeker was tried in Frankfurt, Germany, for attacking a Ukrainian woman with a box cutter in broad daylight back in June 2024. The man, identified as Mohammad Zaman A., stabbed her multiple times in the head and neck before fleeing.
