Meghan Markle caught attention at Paris Fashion Week on Saturday by attending the Balenciaga show — the brand slammed for their ads featuring children which people labeled “demonic.”
A spokesperson for Markle told Page Six she attended the event to support longtime friend Pierpaolo Piccioli, who was named the fashion house’s Creative Director in July. The fashion brand would have had to extend an invitation for Markle to attend — these aren’t open-doors affairs — suggesting there may be more in the works than a singular event. Markle could have declined the offer to attend at any stage.
Instead, the Duchess of Sussex showed support for the brand that made headlines for their 2022 ads featuring young children seemingly posing with teddy bears dressed in fetish-wear. A photo of a purse included a printout of a court ruling on child pornography, according to one screenshot.
“She’s forever ruined her image,” one internet user wrote on Instagram, while another called Markle the “‘duchess’ of hypocrisy.”
Markle dressed all in white, opting to make her bold appearance wearing a long-sleeved button-down tunic with a flowing cape and crisp white matching pants.
Balenciaga apologized for both ads — which social media users decried as “demonic” — in November 2022, announcing that they would sue the production company behind them, according to KUOW.org.
While Markle is no stranger to popular backlash, Balenciaga’s woes with the ads and the relationship breakdown they reportedly suffered with Kanye West after antisemitic rants placed the brand firmly in the line of fire with consumers. Internet users seized the opportunity to call Markle out for choosing to align with Balenciaga despite their marred reputation.
“Balenciaga with their child p*rn and abuse and pedophilia, shows what Meghan really cares about.. herself and whoever will give her a spotlight ?????,” an Instagram user claimed.
