A woman in her thirties was left in a life-threatening condition on Wednesday morning after suffering multiple stab wounds in her apartment in the 18th arrondissement of Paris.
Her partner, also in his thirties, was taken into custody shortly after the incident.
The attack occurred in a social housing building on Rue de Vauvenargues. According to Le Parisien, the victim, a mother of one, was stabbed around 10 times during an argument with the father of her child.
Despite her injuries, she managed to call emergency services at around 8:10 a.m. A neighbour initially believed the man had been hurt, but police arriving on the scene found the woman with serious wounds to her face, arm, and abdomen. Early findings suggest she may have been disemboweled.
Emergency responders stabilized her at the scene before transporting her under police escort to Georges Pompidou Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. Witnesses said they heard screams and repeated cries of “Allahu Akbar” for several minutes before the noise stopped.
Police later arrested the suspect on the fifth floor of the building. He reportedly told officers that the victim had slapped him and that he responded by stabbing her.
The couple, who have lived in the building for about seven months, were not previously known for any public disturbances. Neighbors described the man as friendly and talkative, and the woman as private and reserved.
A 3-year-old child, present during the attack, was temporarily taken into care.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said magistrates have yet to be updated on the woman’s current condition, but upon arrival at the hospital, she was described as critical.
The suspect, already known to police, was taken into custody for questioning.
