‘This Isn’t The Netherlands Anymore’ — Teacher Stabbed During Dutch School Musical

A 53-year-old teacher from Dordrecht was seriously injured in a stabbing on Wednesday evening during a school musical for eighth graders at Het Palet elementary school in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands.

The attack took place as children and parents gathered at the De Haven Cultural Center, where the performance was being held.

According to De Telegraaf, citing eyewitness accounts, the teacher was trying to calm an escalating argument between three men when one of them pulled a knife and stabbed him. Witnesses say the teacher was not involved in the dispute and was likely acting to prevent violence.

Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital with serious injuries. An air ambulance was also at the scene.

“He wasn’t the target,” said one person at the scene. “He came between two men who were about to fight.” Another described the alleged attacker as “not right in the head” and known for being aggressive. Sources also said another man involved had a criminal background.

One man sitting near the victim told Algemeen Dagblad, “I didn’t realize it at first. Suddenly, there was blood all over the hallway, and the teacher was lying on the floor. This was premeditated; otherwise, you wouldn’t bring a knife to a musical.”

Another eyewitness told Alblasserdams Nieuws, “I saw two men enter. One of them buttoned up his jacket. I thought that was strange, because you’d expect to take your jacket off on a night like this. They walked away to the front, and then suddenly there was a blow. Those two came in deliberately to grab a father. They must have been alerted by another parent, I think. They knew exactly where he was. One man immediately punched the father in the audience. The other guy was still standing next to me, and he stayed put. He suddenly grabbed a big pot and threw it.”

The stabbing occurred at around 8:40 p.m. during the school’s end-of-year celebration. In addition to the school musical, other events such as a bingo night were taking place in the building at the time. One woman recounted seeing police outside while playing bingo. “This isn’t the Netherlands anymore,” she said.

After the stabbing, police locked down the building and questioned witnesses. Attendees were only allowed to leave in groups. An ambulance and multiple police units were seen at the scene, and a section of the road was closed off.

Police initially arrested one man who walked out of the building calmly in handcuffs. Later in the evening, two more men were taken into custody. Authorities confirmed that all three are adults who were involved in the original dispute and are now under investigation to determine their roles in the incident.

Dutch police posted on X: “Tonight, one person was seriously injured in a stabbing incident in Alblasserdam during a performance at De Haven. He was rushed to the hospital. Police are investigating the incident.” In a later update, they confirmed that three suspects had been arrested.

In a statement on their website, police wrote: “A school’s end-of-year musical was taking place at the cultural center. It’s suspected that an argument broke out between three men. A teacher got involved, possibly to calm things down. He was stabbed in the process.”

Alblasserdam Mayor Jan Willem Boersma offered his thoughts and condolences to the victim and his family. “This is also terrible for all the children, parents, family, colleagues at school, and staff at the cultural center where the musical was performed. An evening like this should be a celebration. It is deeply saddening that this happened. Arrests have been made, and the police investigation is ongoing.”
