The Washington Post cartoonist who was arrested on charges of possessing child pornography previously produced cartoons depicting conservatives as Nazis and sexual deviants for calling leftists ‘groomers’.
Pulitzer Prize winner Darrin Bell was apprehended after detectives executed a search warrant at Bell’s home following a tip off.
According to Sgt. Amar Gandhi, of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, Bell uploaded as many as 18 files containing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) to an online platform.

Subsequent searches found at least 134 videos containing CSAM, which includes AI-generated material.
Bell’s cartoons were syndicated via the Washington Post Writers Group (WPWG) and also appeared in the New Yorker.
After news broke of his arrest, X users noted how the cartoonist had previously monstered conservatives and Trump supporters as rapists and groomers.
One such example shows a cartoon elephant exposing himself to a group of children, which Bell said was supposed to be a criticism of Republicans who “describe those who teach respect for LGBT people as groomers.”

Another cartoon compares a MAGA hat wearing Trump supporter to a Nazi for complaining about leftists being groomers.
Another example shows Donald Trump molesting the Statue of Liberty while another describes Trump as a “very old rapist.”

He is the first person in California to be charged under their new AI law.

After winning the Pullitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 2019, Bell told ABC News, “I want [readers] to take away that we need to be more respectful of human dignity. That’s the common thread I try to weave through every cartoon that I draw — whether it’s about police brutality or immigrants being separated from their children, or whether it’s about Donald Trump. It’s a big moment of validation.”
Human dignity? Really?
Bell is set to appear in court on Friday.
