It has now emerged that the man who drove a car into people at a Christmas market in Germany, killing five and injuring hundreds had previously threatened to commit a terror attack, and had also threatened to shoot judges.
Der Spiegel reports that “Taleb Al-Abdulmohsen apparently threatened to commit a terrorist act in 2013,” over a dispute with the state’s medical association in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The report notes that he “threatened actions that would attract international attention and referred to the attack on the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.”
The report further notes that according to the Interior Ministry, Abdulmohsen’s apartment was searched and electronic media were also checked. However, investigators found no evidence of “real preparations for an attack.”
A district court sentenced Al-Abdulmohsen to a fine of just 900 Euros for “disturbing public peace by threatening to commit criminal offenses.”
The report further states that he again threatened an attack that “would be remembered for a long time” in 2014, and threatened suicide, prompting police to visit him for a threat assessment.
In 2015, Al-Abdulmohsen is said to have called the judges in his case racists and threatened to get a gun. Despite this, the state’s Interior Minister Christian Pegel notes that Al-Abdulmohsen was not listed as a threat and in 2016 he applied for asylum and was granted German citizenship.

Those pushing back are arguing that the attacker is clearly masquerading as an ex-Islamist and has been doing so for years to secure asylum and avoid being extradited back to Saudi Arabia where he is a known criminal extremist.
