Senator Rand Paul vowed this week that as the new leader of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee he will reinstate the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy.
“I chose to chair this Committee over another because I believe that, for the health of our republic, Congress must stand up once again for its constitutional role,” Paul said in a prepared statement.

He added, “This Committee’s mission of oversight and investigations is critical to Congress reasserting itself.”
“Our first hearing will examine reinstating the successful Remain in Mexico policy from the first Trump Administration,” the senator further urged.
The policy, officially known as Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), was introduced by the Trump administration in December 2018 and mandated that asylum seekers at the southern border wait in Mexico while their claims were processed.
It was this policy that ensured illegal border crossings during Trump’s first term dropped exponentially.

The policy was scrapped by the Biden administration and somewhere in the region of 11 million illegals (a conservative estimate, some say it’s around 16 million) came over the border in just three years.
In order to reinstate the remain in Mexico policy, Paul and Trump will have to gain the cooperation of the Mexican government, which has previously said it will never reimplement it.
Paul also announced that he intends to fast track Trump’s cabinet nominees.
“We will also expeditiously move President Trump’s critical nominees, including Governor Kristi Noem, in time for Inauguration Day,” Paul stated.
Noem is the presumptive nominee to head the Department of Homeland Security.
“I look forward to continuing the storied history of this Committee’s leadership in consequential bipartisan oversight and investigations,” Paul declared.

Rand Paul opposed President Trump’s national emergency declaration to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. In March 2019, Senator Paul announced that he would vote against Trump’s emergency declaration, joining three other Senate Republicans who planned to vote with Democrats in opposition.
Be careful what you wish for.
