Pollster Frank Luntz says the winner of next week’s debate will win the presidential election, while suggesting that Trump should ask Americans, “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?”
“The debate is everything,” Luntz told CNN.
Luntz said it wasn’t just the answers that mattered, but the “body language” and whether they “seem presidential in their approach,” adding that it was important for Trump to “keep quiet” and choose what he responds to wisely.
As for Harris, the pollster noted that “she did not do well in her presidential debates, she did not shine.”
Luntz said that Trump shouldn’t be rude or obnoxious towards Harris because it will lose him a lot of female voters like it did in 2020.
According to Luntz, for Trump, “silence is the best language” because he can ask Kamala questions “which she can’t answer.”
Specifically, “Why did inflation get so high in your administration?” and, “If your policies caused it, what can you do to solve it?”
Luntz also said that Trump should mimic Ronald Reagan in asking Americans, “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?”
“If he asks that question plainly, he will be successful,” said Luntz, although he doubted that Trump would do so.
“The winner of next week’s presidential debate will win the presidential election – but ‘winning’ looks different for Donald Trump and Kamala Harris,” tweeted Luntz.
One wonders how well Kamala Harris will perform given that she has become notorious at avoiding adversarial questions and had to be accompanied by Tim Walz during a recent heavily edited CNN interview.
As we previously highlighted, before Joe Biden dropped out, Luntz predicted that it was “likely” Trump would win the presidency.
“Not only does it look possible, but at this point, if the election were held today, it actually looks likely,” said Luntz.
He subsequently said he thought Trump was “done” after January 6 and impeachment, but that the attacks on him only seem to make him stronger.
Meanwhile, a new poll shows that Trump has taken a narrow lead in the key swing state of Michigan.
The survey, conducted by WDIV/Detroit News between August 26-August 29, found that 44.7 percent of “likely voters” in Michigan supported Trump, while 43.5 percent supported Harris.
