Sick Athletes Drop Out Of Olympics After Being Forced To Swim In Polluted Paris River

A Belgian competitor was hospitalised with E. Coli

Several triathlon competitors have had to withdraw from the Paris Olympics through illness after being made to swim in the grossly polluted river Seine.

As we previously highlighted, competitors were seen vomiting minutes after swimming in the river, which was known to be dangerously polluted before the games began.

The competitors were, nevertheless, made to swim in it.

After complaints, some training sessions in the river were cancelled last week.

Now, Belgian athlete Claire Michel and two other Swiss athletes have had to forfeit a mixed-team relay race.

Belgian media reported that Michel suffered from a four-day infection of E. coli and even had to go to hospital in Paris for treatment.

A statement from the Belgian Olympic Committee made the regretful announcement, noting “Belgian Triathlon hope that lessons will be learned for future triathlon competitions.”

The statement further expressed a desire to see “circumstances that do not cause uncertainty among athletes, entourage and fans.”

The announcement came after another Belgian triathlete Jolien Vermeylen commented ”While swimming under the bridge, I felt and saw things that we shouldn’t think about too much.”

In addition, the Swiss Olympic Team announced the withdrawal of triathlete Adrien Briffod due to a stomach illness contracted after swimming in the river during earlier rounds.

Brifford was replaced by reserve Olympian Simon Westermann, but he also had to withdraw due to a gastrointestinal illness.

“Two dropouts within a few days are very unusual and, first and foremost, unfortunate for the athletes,” the national team’s press release read.

The mayor of Paris has denied that the river is polluted, calling the claim “fake news.”

The statement flies in the face of efforts costing in excess of $1.5 billion that were made prior to the games to clean the river up, as well as subsequent testing of the water that found bacteria levels are below acceptable standards.

Swimming in the river has also been banned since 1923 due to the poor water quality and health hazards.

This latest development comes amid the furore in the women’s boxing and the controversy of the ridiculous opening ceremony featuring drag queens and a man painted blue openly mocking Christianity.

  1. Now WHO would just crap in a RIVER? Oh wait, they said it wasn’t IN the RIVER – it was in the STREETS and then the RAIN flushed it into the RIVER! Whew, for a moment there I thought people were just nasty and would crap in a RIVER!

  2. That happened to me once in the 90’s at a waterpark in Montreal. Man-o-man I’ve never been that sick in my life for a week. If you can’t drink it don’t swim in it.
