Residents in East Palestine, Ohio are angry that the government is claiming the toxic disaster that occurred there last year has been cleaned up, when they can still see the that the waterways are contaminated with chemicals by poking around with a stick.
The story hit the headlines again this week after it was announced that Joe Biden will finally visit the town, a full year after the disaster.
NewsNation spoke to local resident Rick Tsai who demonstrated for the cameras that chemicals are easy to find in the creeks, despite the Environmental Protection Agency continuing to claim that there is no evidence to suggest any risk to human health.
“They’re either inept, or there’s something nefarious going on,” Tsai said, adding “I can teach a 7-year-old to do this with a stick, and the EPA can’t find them with millions of dollars,” before dragging a stick on the creek bed and causing chemicals to leech to the surface.
The report notes that the EPA told NewsNation “We don’t have any science that suggests there is contamination that would pose a human health risk… We don’t have any sign of contamination in the air, in the water, in the soil.”
“They’re lying to you,” Tsai responded.
An independent environmental organisation claims it has found fifteen carcinogenic chemicals in the water.
“These are non-natural, carcinogenic chemicals,” Heather Hulton Vantassel, executive director of Three Rivers Waterkeeper noted, adding “We’re testing for the same things as the EPA and we’re finding really high levels.”
“It’s safe to say the EPA has not done enough testing yet to deem this community safe, based on the exposure that we found in the sediment,” she added.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre got into a spat with a reporter earlier this week who asked if Biden will drink the water when he visits the town.
