A student who was thrown off a psychotherapy master’s degree for expressing ‘gender critical’ opinions has won a lawsuit settlement, and forced the UK Council for Psychotherapy to acknowledge that it is a “valid” professional opinion to suggest children suffering gender dysphoria should receive counselling rather than gender reassignment treatment.
The Daily Mail reports that trainee therapist James Esses sued the Council, prompting it to concede that it is unlawful for any therapist to be discriminated against for believing there are only two sexes.
Mr Esses had been booted from the course at the Metanoia Institute in London, and expelled from Council membership after expressing wrong-think opinions on social media about transgender medical procedures being offered to children, according to the report.
The student had also created a petition on the UK Parliament website calling for the Government not to ban therapy for children who are confused about their gender.
He subsequently filed an employment tribunal case, and argued that his beliefs are protected under the Equality Act, and that his expulsion amounted to discrimination.

After a two year plus battle, Esses came out vindicated, with the UKCP admitting in a statement that it “recognises that gender-critical beliefs (that sex is both binary and immutable) are protected under the Equality Act 2010.”
He is still pressing forward with a lawsuit against the Metanoia Institute, noting “I am now looking forward to seeking full justice against the Metanoia Institute at trial.”
Esses’ case proves that even in full on clown world, unyielding facts will always win out.
