A high Court judge in London has ruled that the parents of a 17-year-old trans-identifying child cannot stop the teenager from having breast removal surgery, despite their claims that their kid is living with severe mental illnesses.
The Telegraph reports (archived non-paywall version here) that “The parents had asked the High Court in London for an injunction banning their child from having a mastectomy,” and that they also requested that a psychiatric analysis be carried out on their child.
The judge refused to grant the injunction, reasoning that the teenager is almost old enough to make adult decisions, and accused the parents of making ‘homophobic comments’.
The report further notes that the judge ruled it would be “wholly disproportionate” to permit a mental health expert to examine the teenager.
The court further heard that the child has accused the parents of hating LGBTQ people to the point of believing they are “evil and Satanic,” and alleged being “emotionally abused” by the parents who repeatedly told the kid that identifying as transgender is a mental illness.
The teenager told the court that the parents “would constantly make homophobic/transphobic comments towards me and say things such as the reason LGBTQ+ is normal in the UK is because they are trying to reduce the population.”
The parents had provided a past short report from a psychiatrist who apparently diagnosed a schizotypal personality disorder in the teenager.
The parents also claim the child has grown up regularly displaying catatonic states, psychotic episodes, and symptoms of being bipolar.
Counter reports from social workers, however, described the child as “a bright, strong minded young individual, doing well academically, with good strong friendship groups,” according to the report.
The development comes after parents of children believing themselves to be transgender wrote to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) calling for a review of its guidance on gender identity amid fears it could lead to “spurious” charges of domestic abuse.
The Telegraph reported:
Parents could even have a police visit for “sharing pre-transition” images of their son or daughter, a move tantamount to “deadnaming” them, a reference to identifying someone by their biological sex rather than the one they have transitioned to.”
