Senior MP Jacob Rees-Mogg defended England fans who booed players ‘taking a knee’, asserting that the response is a backlash against “wokeness” and not an expression of racism.
Some fans once again booed the national team as players took a knee before the Euro 2020 game with Croatia on Sunday, while Croatia players remained standing.
The football establishment and pundits have tried to characterize the booing as racist, claiming that taking a knee isn’t a political statement, despite it being precisely that.
Players only began taking a knee in June 2020 in the aftermath of violent Black Lives Matter riots in response to the death of George Floyd.
Fans inside Wembley boo as England players take the knee ahead of kick off against Croatia in the Euros.
Boos quickly drowned out by applause.

Despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging fans to stop booing, Jacob Rees-Mogg leapt to their defense.
“There is a pushback more generally against wokeness (like) the really rather scandalous behaviour of the Oxford dons who are refusing to teach people at Oriel (College) who through no fault of their own are at a college that happens to have a statue of Rhodes that is difficult to take down and they shouldn’t be taking down anyway,” the MP told ConHome.
Rees-Mogg added that there “wasn’t any evidence” the booing was motivated by racism.
As we document in the video below, the virtue signalling gesture is beyond just a political statement in support of BLM, it is a display of cultural hegemony in that players or teams who refuse to mimic it are immediately targeted by woke mobs.
In reality, the act is a despicably onerous symbol of feckless conformity and it should be booed at every available opportunity.
