German lawmakers from across the political spectrum have denounced the ‘global trend’ of violence against Christians following the Islamic terror attacks in Sri Lanka which killed over 300 people.
“Members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) and Greens all expressed their concern about what they saw as growing violence against Christians,” reports Deutsche Welle.
Germany’s commissioner for religious freedom, Markus Grübel, warned that the Sri Lanka atrocity was part of a “global trend,” remarking, “Christians are the target of radical Muslims worldwide.”
However, he added that this was “incomprehensible,” a conclusion that many people who have studied Islam would challenge.
Former CDU parliamentary leader Volker Kauder also told Bild that there is “growing persecution of Christians in the entire Asian region” and that “nationalist movements of Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims are becoming more and more militant here.”
This sentiment was echoed by FDP deputy leader in the German parliament, Michael Theurer, who said over 100 million Christians live in countries “where the basic human right of religious freedom is currently not respected.”
“Europe must emphatically stand up in the world for the right to freedom of religion,” proclaimed Sven Giegold, a member for the Greens in the European Parliament.
Such rhetoric is refreshing given that other western political figures such as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton can barely bring themselves to use the word “Christian,” instead referring to the victims in Sri Lanka as “Easter worshippers”.
Meanwhile, according to CNN, the entire notion that Christians are being targeted is a conspiracy theory.
Any attack on any house of worship is heinous and should be unequivocally condemned.
