Brunei has sent an angry letter to the European parliament asserting that ‘cultural diversity’ and “tolerance” of Islam should allow it to stone gay people to death without criticism.
The Islamic country recently introduced new punishments for the offenses of theft, robbery, adultery and sodomy. They include amputation, whipping and stoning to death.
After widespread criticism, the government of Brunei hit back by re-asserting that Islam is a “way of life” for its people and that the new laws should be put into context by considering the “diversity” of “the world we share”.
The letter goes on to emphasize that “diversities in cultural, traditional and religious values in the world means that there is no one standard that fits all” and that this necessitates “tolerance”.
Essentially, Brunei is making the same cultural relativist argument that leftists make when asserting that there are no bad cultures in the world (apart from evil western capitalism/imperialism of course).
If it’s done in the name of “diversity” and “tolerance” of Islam, it must be good, right?
